How to create a strong password

Online security is always evolving. Hackers are constantly becoming more sophisticated, so the password policies that worked 10 years ago may not work as well today.

WiFi 16 chars No wZpL2vN8bHqR4tKm

So what do you need for a strong password?

Passwords need to be unpredictable

Passwords need to be unpredictable

The more guesses it takes for a hacker to try and figure out your password, the better. That’s why it’s safer not to use personal data like names, birthdates, or even spouse names in your password. Those are easy to find online and go-to guesses for bad actors.

Length is better than complexity

Length is better than complexity

Rather than forcing symbols or uppercase characters, which often leads to passwords with predictable patterns, focus on length. Use at least 15 characters—and be sure to include a passphrase to make your password easy to remember.

Match passwords to their purpose

They both need to be secure, but a banking password isn’t the same as a WiFi password. Matching your passwords to their intended purpose makes sure your credentials have the right level of security.

Common questions

No. Password generation happens only in your browser, and nothing you generate is ever transmitted or stored.

Currently, cybersecurity authorities like the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) recommend that passwords include at least 15 characters.

Every preset option in the WinZip password generator meets or exceeds that recommendation. You can also choose to generate passwords with more characters using the password length slider.

Yes. A password’s purpose is a starting point. You can still adjust every setting after choosing a purpose for your password.

Some router firmware can’t handle certain symbols, which can cause connection errors on older or less common devices. By default, the preset for WiFi passwords doesn’t include symbols, but you can choose to include them if you know your router supports them.
