An XLSX file is a Microsoft Excel document that is not restricted to just Microsoft Excel. When Microsoft Excel 2007 was released, Microsoft introduced XLSX as the default file type to save the documents as. The file is much the same as XLS: it’s a spreadsheet document based on cells and is used in nearly every line of work to display and edit data and calculate formulas. While the XLS file can only be fully opened in Microsoft Excel, the XLSX document can be used freely in Open Office, Apple Numbers, and other spreadsheet software. It is also a lighter, faster file than the XLS, so it does not take up as much storage space.
A PDF, or a Portable Document Format, is one of the most common types of digital files you will come across. It was created by Adobe and the advantage of this file is that it can be opened and viewed on nearly every application, including most web browsers. Editing a PDF is a little tricky, but there are a few programs around that will let you do that. PDF files often contain both images and text and are a good format to share documents with others as there is a high chance they will be able to view it, unlike DOC files. PDFs can also contain links and buttons and can be signed electronically, making them great for contracts.
Today, XLSX files are the standard, default file type for Microsoft Excel. This was to match the competition they were facing from Open Office which was producing similar software not restricted to Microsoft licenses. XLSX files can be opened in Microsoft Excel and other similar applications like Apple Numbers and Google Sheets. Even though it is more widely used, and XLSX can have formatting issues when opened in a different application. To get around this, convert your XLSX to a PDF to allow people to open it, share it, and view it in any kind of application.
