Cameras (Configuration)
This operation requires Windows XP or later.
The Cameras tab in the Configuration Dialog Box allows you to configure options for zipping pictures, audio, and video from digital still cameras.
See Working with your digital camera for full information about how WinZip® Pro helps you work with your digital still camera.
AutoPlay options
Your choice among the three AutoPlay options determines what WinZip will do when you click "Zip from camera using WinZip" in the Windows AutoPlay dialog.
- WinZip Camera Wizard: If you choose this option, WinZip will display the WinZip Camera Wizard to guide you through your choices in downloading and zipping your pictures. Use this option if you want to be able to choose how your pictures are handled each time.
- Quick zip from camera: If you choose this option, WinZip will skip the Camera Wizard and use the settings defined in this tab. Use this option if you want AutoPlay to automatically use your default camera settings. (You can use Add from still camera in the Actions menu for any occasional special needs.)
- Ask me every time: If you choose this option, WinZip will ask whether you want to use the Camera Wizard. Choose this option if you want the chance to decide each time whether to use your default settings or to change them in the Camera Wizard.
Default settings
The remaining settings are your defaults. They are used:
- as the initial choices among the various options when you use the Camera Wizard, and
- as the automatic settings that WinZip will use if you click "Zip from camera" in the AutoPlay dialog and you have chosen Quick zip from camera in the AutoPlay options (above).
The options are as follows. Remember that you can override any of these settings when you're using the Camera Wizard.
Picture Selection
This option controls which pictures will be retrieved from the camera.
- Get all my pictures from the camera: WinZip will automatically retrieve all of the pictures stored on the camera.
- Let me select the pictures I want: WinZip will display a dialog showing thumbnails of the pictures on the camera, allowing you to select the pictures you want WinZip to retrieve.
Compression
This option controls the compression method used to store the pictures in you Zip file.
- Legacy compression: Choose this option if you frequently share your pictures with others who may be using older Zip file utilities. The compressed picture files will usually be larger than they would be if compressed with the Best Method option, but your recipients will be able to use any Zip file utility to view them.
- Best Method: Choose this option to provide optimal compression for minimal use of storage space. Best Method uses a special JPEG compression method that compresses JPEG pictures better than other methods, with no loss of picture quality (there is no loss of picture quality with any WinZip compression method). To extract these files, you will need WinZip 12.0 or later or a compression utility that supports this new compression method.
Note: even if you select Best Method, you can still email pictures using Legacy compression (for compatibility) with WinZip's Send Selected Files To feature.
Folder for zipped pictures
This option sets the default folder where WinZip will store your picture Zip files.
- My Documents\My WinZip Files: When chosen, WinZip will place the Zip file in the My WinZip Files folder under the My Documents folder.
- My Pictures: When chosen, WinZip will place the Zip file in the My Pictures folder.
- Desktop: When chosen, WinZip will place the Zip file in the Desktop folder.
Miscellaneous
These options control miscellaneous aspects of acquiring pictures and other files from your camera.
- In addition to pictures, get any videos from the camera: This option sets WinZip to automatically retrieve any video files from cameras that support video.
- Get any audio files associated with selected pictures: This option sets WinZip to automatically retrieve any audio files associated with pictures from cameras that support audio association with pictures.
- Get miscellaneous (unknown) files: This option is used for picture, video, or audio formats that are not recognized by Windows. Use this option if, for example, your camera contains pictures that are not shown in the picture selection dialog. This situation occurs most commonly when you take pictures in a camera's proprietary RAW format.
- Rotate pictures when needed: This option instructs WinZip to rotate pictures, when possible, into the correct orientation (portrait or landscape) before zipping. This feature requires camera support; see Picture Rotation for more information.
